Changing the Transaxle Fluid (5 Speed) AWD

Here is the fill plug for the transmission. I chose to remove the MAS and Airbox for easier access. It takes me about 3 minutes to take it off.

First*, take the fill plug out using a 17 MM wrench or socket. The dotted arrow shows direction of wrench.

*From reading the DSM boards it is recommended by many to take out the fill plug first.

Place a Catch pan under the transaxle and remove the drain plug with a 24 MM socket (arrow).

The dotted arrow shows where I stuck a mallet between the transaxle and the plastic cover. This moves it out of the way so fluid doesn't hit it and go everywhere.

Let it drain for an hour or so. I also used my airgun in the fill hole to blow out excess fluid.

Once it is drained to your liking torque the drain plug back in to specifications.

The local auto store had this funnel. I chose it because of the nice clear tube. The funnel has an On/Off twist valve, so you can fill the top part and then open it up for less mess.

Also, the end fits all of the fill holes in the drivetrain.

Insert the clear tube from the funnel into the fill plug. Now you can understand why I removed the MAS.
Fill the funnel up with the fluid of your choice. I turned the spout off so the top filled and then opened it up to drain in so I could hold the other end at the fill hole.

Once it is full it will trickle out around the fill hole. The clear tube allows you to see the fluid stop going in.

Place fill plug back on and take it for a ride. Check for leaks and recheck the level later on.
