Transfer Case Fluid Change

Crawl under the car (I did not jack up). Using a 17mm Socket or wrench remove the Fill plug First*. *From reading the DSM boards it is recommended by many to take out the fill plug first.

Here is another shot using a box end wrench. I used
the box end so I could see it was on the bolt properly (No stripping).
I had to give it a tap with a hammer to break it loose.

Place a catch pan underneath. Using a 24 MM socket,
remove the drain plug (arrow).

The local auto store had this funnel. I chose it because of the nice clear tube. The funnel has an On/Off twist valve, so you can fill the top part and then open it up for less mess. Also, the end fits all of the fill holes in the drivetrain. |

Once drained, put the drain plug back on and tighten it to specified torque. I placed the clear tube from the funnel above into the fill hole. |

The dotted lines to the left show where I ran the
tube up along the turbo feed line.

The circle shows the end of the tube. Working from
above allows for an easier fill. It also helps to have a friend (or
Fiancee') pour the fluid while another person watches and holds the
tube from below.

I placed a smaller funnel into the tube to avoid spilling
fluid everywhere. It doesn't smell good burning on the exhaust or engine.

Pour/squeeze fluid into the tranfer case until it runs out around the tube and is level with the filler hole. Torque the fill plug back on according to specification and you are done. Drive and check for leaks. I like to drive for a day or so and then pull the fill plug to double check the level. |
