Head Rebuild Page 2

Remove the water pump pulley using a 10mm wrench. Be sure to mark its position. Probably not necessary but I do.

The timing cover has what seems to be about 9 10mm bolts holding it in. I did this from over and under the car.

Remove the cover carefully to avoid breaking it. It will get caught on a few things.

I placed all of the stuff together. Pretty huh?

Here are the TDC marks on the 1993. They are different on other years so make 100% sure you check your car out.

I rotated the crank clockwise until it was top dead center.

The timing belt, tensioner and water pump are brand new so I am reusing them. I used white out to mark the belts relation to the gears.

Note the center marks which I highlighted for clarity.

Here is my home made timing tool. I used a battery bolt and made longer threads with a die.

A web page with More pics of how I made it here.

Twist it in with a 10mm socket and take the tension of off the tensioner.

Remove the valve cover (10mm).

I used white out to mark the cams at TDC. Just to be safe.

Using a 17mm socket and wrench (forgot the size), I took off the sprockets. I marked each one with an "I" and an "E" (Intake and Exhaust) to avoid mix-up (not like I couldn't figure it out :).

Using what I believe was a 13 or 14 mm socket, I removed the stock head studs.

I yanked the head off with the intake still attached. You may choose not to do this.

The intake bolts are much easier to get to off of the car.

There are the pistons. Exciting!

The head on the bench ready for disassembly.
A shot of the dirty valves and nasty head.
Time for fun. I used a 12mm socket to remove the caps from the camshaft.

I gave them a very slight tap to free them up and remove them by wiggling them off.

Pull them straight off to avoid bending where they rest. There are sleeves under them.

Here are the sandwich bags I have marked for the valves, rockers, lifters and springs.

IN 8 is for Intake side #8 and so on. It is very important to keep stuff in order. You want it to go back from where it came.

Cam removed. I did one side of the head at a time.
Using my handy homemade valve compressor , I began removing the springs and retainers. I used a Pick up tool magnet to pull the retainers out.
Removing the valve stem seals.
Here is a pic of the head with everything removed ready to go to the machine shop.
I labeled the valves and soaked them in brake cleaner for a few days while doing other things.
