Base Idle Set Screw BISS

For More info on the adjustment of idle related components, please refer to manuals or www.vfaq.com.

My idle on the AWD was acting up so I went to adjust the BISS screw and realized it turned with little effort and was screwed all the way in. That meant the O-ring was probably messed up. Sure enough I backed it out and found the O-ring was shot.

I went to Sears and picked up another O-ring for 25 cents or so.

The Part Number is 3/8 x 1/4 x 1/16 #5 O-RING

Simply remove the old ring and put the new one on.

I also checked the ISC Motor while I was at it. Here I am measuring the resistance between terminals 2 and 3 on the plug.

Refer to a shop manual or another form of instructions for complete ISC Motor testing.

To adjust the BISS, warm the car up to the normal operating temperature. Turn off accessories. Place the car in Neutral or Park.

Behind the battery is a plug (Ignition Timing Adjustment). It has a cap that when removed, reveals a connector.

Place an alligator clip on the connector.
Ground the other end of the wire to the firewall.

Under the dash find the pin that is 3rd from the bottom.

Take an Alligator clip and ground it to the chassis.

Turn the screw all the way in but not too hard!!! Then back it out 2 complete turns. From there you can adjust it.

Crank the car and set the idle to 750 RPM. Turning in lowers the idle speed, turning out raises the idle speed.

Shut the car off and remove the clips you had grounded. Make sure you replace the cap on the Ignition timing adjustment plug.
