Changing the Alternator and

AC Belts

The Power Steering Pump FAQ is here

This is for the two belts only and something the Haynes or Chilton can show you , but I may throw something in there to make it easier for you. Besides, when they say remove bolt take off belt, that is kind of vague.

Begin by removing the Drivers side wheel and the guard pictured. Remove the 2 bolts (12mm) and the two Phillips head plastic tabs.

On the front wheel drive 1G you have to remove more screws in the front end to completely take it off. I just removed these and pulled it to the side.

This will enable you to see the pulleys and belts clearly.

I removed the driver's side fan to give me more room to work with. This involves removing Three 10mm bolts (2 top and one on the bottom) and unplugging the harness (by the ratchet in pic).

Remove the fan.

NOTE: Disconnect the ground to the battery. If you hit and arc where the voltage comes in you could burn up the system.

Loosen the 12mm nut on the alternator. This is kind of tough to get to. It's close to the oil filter bracket and block.

Loosen the 12mm bolt in the tensioner.
Loosen the adjusting screw (to the left as you would any regular bolt) and push the alternator forward.
Once loose enough, push the tensioning bolt up and over the lip. This will allow you to loosen the belt as much as possible to remove.
Remove the alternator belt as shown. This will allow you to get to the AC belt next.

Find the AC pulley assembly (by the Motor Mount).

With a 14mm wrench loosen the nut that locks the adjuster (cant see it follow the arrow down) Careful not to strip it!

Loosen the tensioner (same direction as loosening any bolt...to the left). You should see slack in the belt.
Remove the three 12mm bolts holding the tensioner assembly to the block.
Remove the tensioner and old belt.
Place the new belt on the tensioner pulley as shown and place it back where it was.
Place the belt on the crank and AC compressor pulley.
Since I only have two hands, I used a bungee cord to align it and keep the belt from falling off. I lined up the tensioner.
I put the 3 bolts back in and torqued them to spec.

Tighten the tensioner pulley and the belt will tighten as well.

I left an inch of play up and down (See manuals) then lock the 14mm nut and you are finished.

Place the alternator belt on the alternator and then the crank pulley.

Place the tensioner screw back in its slot and tighten it. Once again, I used the inch of play up and down.

Finally tighten the locking bolt (right side) and then the alternator pivot (left side).

Complete!

This was the old alternator belt I removed. I think I found the belt that was making the noise.
